I don’t know about y’all, but I keep finding myself with a poor attitude and a discouraged mindset when I think about our election in 22 days. It’s my first opportunity to vote and I have been eagerly anticipating it all year. There are plenty of things that I would label as important traits/ideals expected in a presidential candidate, although some of those aren’t found in either of our current candidates. Watching those past two presidential debates has filled me with an array of different emotions. Fortunately, my attitude changed from stressed-out to satisfied and I would love to share that change with you.
Think about the candidates and what you want for our country. Think about what you deem plausible for our candidates to accomplish out of that list you just conjured up in your head. They can’t accomplish all of those things, can they? They can’t satisfy all of your needs, all of my needs, or even all the needs of our country in entirety. Basically, they aren’t the solution to making a radical, completely positive difference in regards to the course of the United States. Now that I’ve discouraged you even more, let me introduce you to the One who is the solution.
We talk all the time about how everything is in God’s hands. We say that if you put your trust in God, everything will work out as it’s supposed to. Often times we say that we trust God with the course of our day, and we do when it seems as though things are actually going well, right? Why don’t we start trusting God with the bigger things, as well as the small things? Those bigger things to us are just small things to God. Take this election, for example.
It does you absolutely no good to sit and contemplate the election as most currently do – listing the flaws of each of the candidates and brutally comparing them with the people that we esteem within politics. It’s pointless to equate our own knowledge in regards to what would or wouldn’t be beneficial to our country to that of God’s knowledge. Unfortunately, we do that all the time.
I’m an advocate for Jesus and I believe that the only efficient way of solving this situation is to trust Him. Leave it all at the foot of the cross. Leave it all in the hands of the One who made all things. Trust him with all that you are, all that you have, and all that you encounter. Let’s campaign for Jesus. Let’s choose to seek Him before we seek our politicians. Give Him your time and your energy before you give it to them. Allocate time in your day to spend time with God before you allocate time to catch up on your politics. They aren’t even your politics, actually. They are God’s politics, and He will do with them what He knows is necessary as long as you let Him.
Will you pray with me?
Lord, I pray that you are with each of us in this season of elections. I give you all of my anxieties induced by the election and I ask that You help me to trust You. I pray that you’re with our candidates, and that you ignite a fire within each of their hearts. I pray that it’s a fire of deep desire to satisfy You, Lord. Let their actions be intentionally for your glory, their words be used to bring life to your kingdom, and their hearts be transformed for You. God, I pray that your will be done. I pray that You become clearly evident and vibrant within our government. I ask that You radically change the hearts of our candidates so that they seek You above anything else. Encounter them, Lord. Open their eyes to see You and your magnificence. God, I trust you. Thank you for moving on my behalf.
Let’s campaign for Jesus. Let’s trust Him in all things, including our election. Join me!
