I knew that moving to Australia for a few months was going to be challenging and exciting at the same time and I was expectant of both of those. I understood the struggles that I would face being so far from my family’s loving embrace and the friendships that I forever treasure. I also knew that I was going to be tested, challenged, and built up in my faith in Christ. I wasn’t sure what that meant specifically, but I went into the whole adventure of it with the anticipation that I’d get a few wake-up calls from Jesus.
In order to develop a strong relationship you have to commit to spending time with each other. You can’t meet someone off the street and immediately have a lasting friendship with them because you only know a fragment of who they are. Those lasting friendships develop through hard work and intentional commitment to know one another.
The same goes for Jesus. You can’t be in a relationship with Jesus if you don’t intentionally seek Him and put in the hard work it takes to be fully committed. He’s always there. He always has both hands stretched open and He’s ready to catch you when you come running at Him full speed.
So, what do you do? You tithe. You may think I’m joking or that I have totally confused my post topic, but I’m so serious. We give God the first 10% of all of our earnings, so why not give Him the same of your time? I’m not saying that you have to count up all of the hours of your day and allot different things to different percentages of time like a budgeting sheet. I’m saying that He deserves your first. That means that before you tie your tennis shoes and head out for a run, before you make the kids breakfast, before you start checking things off of your day-to-day checklist. Jesus comes first. PERIOD.
I get up pretty early just out of habit and I’ve developed a routine of reading Jesus Calling Peace in His Presence before I even leave my room. It’s a short and quick little devo that enables me to sit still for a couple minutes and hangout with Jesus. I also try to read my bible/journal right before I go to bed. They’re both very small things but they’re both so good for not only me, but for my relationship with Christ as well.
If you’re sitting there reading this and you’re like, “Wow Anna that’s such a cool idea, I should totally do that but I don’t know how”, I can help you. In my last post I mentioned trashing your Bible. Check out that post and sign up for it because it’s the coolest experience you’ll ever have reading God’s word. You have approximately ONE DAY to sign up and I definitely encourage you to. However, if you don’t want to or something falls through with that, there are a million Bible studies out there to help you get the most out of your relationship with God. One of which is Arabah Joy’s 7 Days in 7 Ways, which is all about Bible study methods! I love her blog. Honestly you should check it out because it’s way better than watching Netflix or doing anything else that consumes your time.
So, now that I’ve gone off on a baby rabbit trail, let’s get back to the point. The bottom line is that God deserves your first, and if you’re craving an intimate relationship with the One who made you, give Him that. I promise that it’ll change your outlook on life and that you’ll approach each day feeling refreshed, revived, and ready to embrace your day with joy.
Now, go and be blessed in all of your endeavors to pursue Christ with all that you are.
